BIG Small Beast - Record Release Party

The following is the press release for the BIG Small Beast party that’s celebrating the release of Little Annie & Paul Wallfisch’s new album Genderful (I did the package design, layout and photography) and the new Botanica album, Who You Are. Genderful, was released on Apr 5th in the UK on Southern Records (http://blog.southern.com/2010/03/genderful/) and is being rolled out worldwide over the next few weeks.

The Small Beast and The Delancey present:
The BIG Small Beast!
Friday, May 21st 2010
The Angel Orensanz Foundation
172 Norfolk Street
New York City
With: MILES BENJAMIN ANTHONY ROBINSON; SAVOIR ADORE; BOTANICA; BEE AND FLOWER; LITTLE ANNIE & PAUL WALLFISCH; BARBEZ; SERVICES; FRANZ NICOLAY; BLACK SEA HOTEL; LAPIS LAZULI
Doors at 6:30, music to follow immediately…

The BIG Small Beast celebrates a year and a half of the acclaimed Small Beast music series at the Delancey, curated and hosted by Paul Wallfisch. This show marks the end of phase one of The Small Beast, as Paul moves to Germany to take over as music director at the Stadt Theater Dortmund. The Small Beast gets up on its hind legs; roars; goes international!

We’ve put together a fabulously eclectic night of music representing the best of New York City; transcending genre, yet somehow of the same scene—an elusive word that has come to life this past year through The Small Beast. The magnificence of the venue—a landmarked, 19th century synagogue--cum artist’s studio--cum performance mecca, will present the natural theatricality of all the artists on the bill in an ideal setting. The BIG Small Beast will be a unique New York City event not to be missed!

In addition, The BIG Small Beast serves as record release party for Botanica’s 7th album, (and first domestic release in 10 years), “Who You Are,” out on Devil’s Ruin Records, May 25th. Limited edition white vinyl will be available at the show.

The BIG Small Beast also marks the U.S. release of Paul Wallfisch & Little Annie’s eagerly anticipated new album “Genderful” on Southern Records.

SAVOIR ADORE
http://www.facebook.com/savoiradore
http://www.myspace.com/savoiradore (3 free tracks available…)
A self-coined "fantasy rock" duo, Brooklyn's Savoir Adore, signed to the Cantora label — home of the likeminded neo-psychedelic group MGMT —released their first album, The Scientific Findings of Dr. Rousseau, in 2007. Savoir Adore immediately drew favorable comparisons to such established names as Postal Service and Broken Social Scene.
“L-Magazine”—“8 New York City Bands You Need to Hear”
Starting as a two-piece consisting of singer-songwriter Deidre Muro on keyboards, and Paul Hammer on drums, they’ve since become a six-piece, with the 1st single from their upcoming album, the instant hit “We Talk Like Machines” already available.

BOTANICA http://www.botanicaisaband.com/ http://www.myspace.com/botanica
… the main songwriting vehicle for the local piano man Paul Wallfisch, celebrates the release of its latest album, “Who You Are.” Wallfisch entered the eighties East Village demimonde as an eighteen-year-old keyboardist in the pioneering gay comic Frank Maya’s New Wave band. Since then he’s lived in Europe and L.A. (where he started Botanica), acquiring decades of world-weary insights to fill his exquisitely crafted rock songs and Tom Waits-tinged ballads. Botanica’s current incarnation includes Brian Viglione, the hard-hitting former Dresden Dolls drummer, and John Andrews, a longtime collaborator who contributes meticulous, occasionally dissonant guitar lines. ~The New Yorker
“…Paul Wallfisch remains one of the most brilliant songwriters of our time.” ~Eclipsed Magazine, Germany 3/2010
Like Joy Division or Nina Simone, Botanica enjoys a cult appeal with a taste-defining sensibility, a still-necessary antidote to so called “hipster irony.” Botanica have a rep for intense live shows – anybody who’s seen their frontman Paul Wallfish do his solo thing at the weekly Small Beast show on Thursday evenings at the Delancey knows this – but Friday night’s sonic onslaught caught the crowd like a low-flying jetliner. ~Lucid Culture Blog, Joe’s Pub Review 3/2009

BEE & FLOWER http://www.beeandflower.com/
Founded in 1999 in New York City by singer-songwriter, bassist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, Dana Schechter and keyboardist Roderick Miller, the music of Bee and Flower envelops the listener into an intimate, luxurious and orchestrated world, filled with moody strings, piano, percussion, ghostly slide guitars, and lush female vocals. Produced by Toby Dammit, Bee and Flower's second album, "Last Sight of Land", features a 25-piece string section, and collaborations from members of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Calexico, Keren Ann, Iggy Pop, & Swans.
UNCUT, UK
… the real selling point is her out-of-body sounding voice. Among the gothic droning, she sounds like Polly Harvey sticking pins into a voodoo doll of Burt Bacharach, and it’s a hugely arresting sound.
— Bella Todd
TIME OUT NEW YORK
"Bee and Flower makes a slow-moving, seductive morass of lyrical noise that grabs you by the scruff of the neck and shakes you down before you even know what’s hit you.
— LD Beghtol
THE VILLAGE VOICE
Their sound is otherworldly - you almost feel as if you could leave your body while listening to it..."
— Ken Switzer

Over the past few years, the duo has opened shows for Antony & the Johnsons, Sun Oh))), Marc Almond and Sleazy, as well as countless headlining dates & festivals in a dozen European countries.

Barbez, finds an enticing middle ground between Kurt Weill's cabaret, droning avant-garde rock and the twinkling perpetual-motion pieces of Erik Satie.” ~NY Times
…on originals, including the percussive “Strange” and the title cut, the band members display a command of dynamics that rivals noise innovators Sonic Youth and Swans. ~Time Out New York

FRANZ NICOLAY http://www.myspace.com/franznicolay
That mustachioed man-about-town you've seen with The Hold Steady, World/Inferno Friendship Society, Anti-Social Music, and more, steps up to the spotlight and salutes.

Rolling Stone: "The Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay is best known for his classic boogie piano lines, jubilant backing vocals and sharply curving mustache, but his new solo album Major General looks to catapult him to star status."

Pitchfork: 7.3/10 "Eclectic and ambitious but unshowy, Major General is about as satisfying as any solo effort from a member of an established band still killing it themselves as I can think of... Nicolay's skill at playing punk sage on one song and slightly troubled troubadour on the next is really something special."

LA Weekly: "…cinematically scaled opera of open-heartedly big ballads, wayward Gypsy troubadour tales and hilariously scabrous sermons about the importance of living large in these crampingly caution-strewn times."

BLACK SEA HOTEL http://www.myspace.com/blackseahotel
…will perform 2 songs, unamplified, from the Angel Orensanz balcony!
Brooklyn vocal quartet BSH performs arrangements of traditional Balkan melodies in venues ranging from the Bulgarian Embassy to rock clubs. Their debut album can be bought on CDBaby: http://www.cdbaby.com/blackseahotel

LAPIS LAZULI http://www.lapislazulimusic.com/
…will greet concertgoers as they entere the Angel Orensanz. Kurt Wolf’s (Pussy galore, Boss Hog etc), new one-man orchestra.Rolling Stone says: "...Ennio Morricone making a raga pilgrimage to India alongside the Stooges...this is what they would have recorded for some long-lost cinematic masterpiece."
